The World Cup is one of those things that brings everyone in—diehard soccer fans, casual watchers, and people who mostly show up for the food and the drama.
And honestly, that’s part of what makes it fun.
Before World Cup energy takes over TSC, here are a few facts about the payers in this year's tournament.
The Trophy Was Stolen… and Found by a Dog
Before the 1966 World Cup in England, the trophy was stolen while on display. People searched everywhere, and then a dog named Pickles found it wrapped in newspaper during a walk.
The same trophy, called the Jules Rimet Trophy, was later stolen again in 1983 and never found.
So yes, a dog once saved the World Cup trophy… and somehow still has a better track record than the people guarding it.
The Fastest Goal Took 11 Seconds
In 2002, Turkey’s Hakan Şükür scored against South Korea after just 11 seconds.
That’s not even enough time to get comfortable on the couch.
The Fastest Red Card Was Almost as Quick
Uruguay’s José Batista was sent off against Scotland in 1986 after about one minute.
Imagine making it to the World Cup and barely getting enough time to break a sweat.
One World Cup Game Had 12 Goals
In 1954, Austria beat Switzerland 7–5, making it the highest-scoring World Cup match ever. .
Twelve goals in one game. That’s less of a soccer match and more of a group text going out of control.
The match was played in brutal heat — around 104°F — and Schmied was hit hard by sunstroke early in the game. Switzerland scored three quick goals while he was struggling just to stay upright.
And because substitutions weren’t allowed back then, he couldn’t come out of the game.
So Austria’s masseur, Josef Ulrich, basically became part goalkeeper assistant, part sideline survival coach. He stayed near the goal, helped guide Schmied, and gave him cold water whenever he could.
Schmied somehow kept going, but the whole thing was so rough that he reportedly didn’t remember the match afterward.
So yes, the highest-scoring World Cup game ever also included a goalkeeper battling 104-degree heat with help from a masseur stationed near the goal.
Soccer used to be a little less “sports science” and a little more “please survive until halftime.”
The 2026 World Cup Is Going to Be Huge
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and it will have 48 teams.
More teams means more games, more fans, more upsets, and more people acting like they totally predicted the result afterward.
Goalkeepers Are Quiet… Until They’re Not
Most of the time, goalkeepers are waiting, organizing, yelling, and hoping nobody makes their life harder.
But in big moments, they can become the whole story with one save, one mistake, or one sprint up the field that makes everyone nervous.
If your keeper does that at pickup, just be ready for the comments.

Every country brings something different: the chants, the jerseys, the way they play, the way their fans react, and the full emotional rollercoaster that comes with every match.
